As the beginners of brass players, it is essential to cultivate and sustain their tone through the deliberate practice of sustaining notes and developing a proficient embouchure—the interaction between lips and mouthpiece. Sound production occurs at the origin of the air column, where it is propelled and articulated through the vibration of the lips against the mouthpiece. These vibrations are initiated and maintained through a consistent airflow, maintained at stable pressure, facilitated by the support and engagement of the diaphragm. Please see the illustration: Holding a pole about 1.5m long between the wall and your diaphragm. If the breathing is wrong and there is insufficient support, the pole will drop down to the ground.

The vocal courses of CONCONE and BORDOGNI are best suited for brass playing development. Careful use of these materials can be therapeutic for students, who are overstretched and overexerted, especially in contemporary music.
